Care Package

I am working on Abbey's care package. I am trying to keep it small enough for a shoe box. I am not sending clothes because I am hoping to be able to keep her orphanage clothes. Another mom told me that it is very comforting for them to smell and sleep with their clothes from China.

Included are:
Baby blanket
Bunny
Toy cell phone that has my voice recorded
Lotion and chocolates for the nannies
Photo book with family pictures/Chinese labels
Disposable camera with Chinese instructions

I also have a wonderful list of questions for the orphanage workers. I really want these answered for my daughters sake but I am a little concerned that they may feel it is asking too much to have them fill it out. Now I do know that many of these packages are never seen or heard of again. Do you think they will feel like I am asking too much? I guess I can just hope and try.

I hadn't thought of preparing that in advance but that's a great idea! I also have bought the little photo album, so maybe I will pick up some other items too.

I've heard a lot of people who get the cameras back filled with photos. Go for it!

It can't hurt. My agency doesn't allow us to send care packages. I love the idea of the phone with your voice recorded in it.

What a wonderful care package!! I have heard that the nannies are pretty good about taking pics of your daughter.- which would be wonderful to have.

Great idea...I wish I would have done that!

    Re: The clothes..

I have an adopted brother. The clothes he came to us in (at 6 weeks old) have been kept in a box for 36 years. They are an important piece of his history. He was dressed, carefully, lovingly in these items by his caregivers in preparation for his new life. A day of hope and high emotion.
You're doing the right thing Christi. There are days and months years ahead for all the other lovely clothes you will have bought for her :o)

Great idea! Love the phone with your voice! May I ask where you found it?

I have a photo album purchased but since referral is probably a year+ off will wait to fill it with pics later.

One thing you may want to consider is sleeping with the blanket for a few nights and then placing it in a ziploc bag before sending it. Baby's sense of smell is very acute and it may help later if your scent is familiar. I plan on doing something similar with some/all of her clothing that she has on when I receive her so that she can have a piece the night we change hotels and then another one when we arrive home in Canada. Comfort clothes!

One more thing that was suggested to me. You may want to find a courier company that will charge the duty/customs back to you. It's often very expensive for the orphanages to receive these packages so a company that will do that will help the orphanage out.

I hope your referral comes soon and that you'll be mailing off your package shortly!

    Blessings

I sent a care package when I received the referral for my daughter. We sent it USPS Global Priority, I sent two cameras and both came back full of priceless pictures. They also answered all of my questions. Good Luck! The wait is worth it, we just had our 6 month post placement today and it is hard to imagine life without our empress.
